UDCA Student-Led Charity Sale 2024
Ying Li
On May 4th, the UDCA charity sale group, consisting of a wide age range of Upper Dublin students and their mothers, held their second-ever yard sale in the neighborhood of Matthew Xie and his family. Early in the morning, the group took action and began setting up for the charity sale. Ryan Gu and his mother were responsible for delivering the charity sale supplies. Henry Yang and his mom, Mingjing, also helped transport the items to the site.
While they were driving over, brothers Ayden and Lance Yang began setting up tables and clothes racks under the guidance of their mother, Xiao Lin. Upon their arrival, the brothers hurried over to assist them in unloading the charity items from the car. Next, they neatly hung clothes on the hangers, organized books and toys on the tables, and elegantly arranged the shoes on the lawn. Alisa and her mother, Dongmei, carefully laid out the rest of the charity supplies. Many of the toys were thoughtfully donated by Edward Shi.
Director Annie of UDCA not only provided charity items but also helped set the charity station.
Elementary school student Jace Li and his friend Ethan Liu initiated a lemonade stand with the aid of Jace's mother, Jiping. In a brief moment, everything was up and ready to go.
After nine o'clock, a constant stream of people came to the site. The students enthusiastically greeted and assisted them with navigating through the items on sale while cooperatively answering any questions from the buyers. To attract more attention, Ayden raised a charity sale sign.
The mothers stood not far away, chatting and supervising the sale, prepared to help at any time. While they were having small talk, the sound of melodious music suddenly entered their ears. It turned out that the music came from Jace's iPad. The cheerful music gave a sense of joy to the otherwise mild setting of the charity sale, and also successfully attracted many passers-by.
Surprisingly, one of the ladies who came by watched our 2024 Lunar New Year program.
Thanks to the children's unremitting efforts and the people's generous donations, the charity sale group was accumulating a good amount of funds.
Before noon, clouds began converging overhead, showing immediate signs of rainy weather. The temperature steadily dropped to around 53 degrees Fahrenheit, prompting the end of the charity sale. From 8:30 to 11:40 a.m., the charity sale ran for a decent amount of time, providing an opportunity for the young volunteers to exercise their abilities in running a charity event.
Finally, we would like to show much appreciation to all of the students and mothers who participated in this event. Thanks to Kong Xinkai, Zhu Yajing, Yuzhen, and Mingjing for providing tables and clothing hangers for this event. Thanks to Tianying for providing a venue for this UDCA charity sale. Last but not least, many thanks to our photographer Jiping for capturing many beautiful moments so that our event can be remembered forever.
